So. Scratch Barry Bonds off of John McCain's list of potential fund-raisers.

On a national radio show today, the Republican presidential candidate said that Bonds' career home-run mark should carry an asterisk next to it in the record books because Bonds has been linked to performance-enhancing drugs.

"I am entitled to my opinion, but I respect the views of others," McCain said during an interview on a show hosted by former ESPN personality Dan Patrick. "I hope, as an avid sports nut, that an asterisk should be after Mr. Bonds' name. I don't say that I would legislate it, but I would advocate it."

McCain's remarks were made as major league baseball braces for the revelations of superstar steroid use in a report authored by former Sen. George Mitchell. Mitchell, who has been investigating use of performance-enhancers in the sport, is expected to release his findings after the World Series.

McCain, a senator from Arizona, also joked that his position in the presidential race is similar to that of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who now trail the rampaging Colorado Rockies 3-0 in the National League Championship Series. "Thank you for your honesty," Patrick replied.

If that really is the case, does McCain, whose campaign has been dogged by reports of inadequate funds, really want to alienate a man like Bonds who makes almost $20 million a year?

Apparently, that's the price to be paid for straight talk.
