Sen. Barack Obama is leaving Trinity United Church of Christ, his longtime religious home in Chicago and a place that has triggered repeated controversies during his presidential bid.
"This is not a decision that I come to lightly, and frankly it's one that I made with some sadness," Obama told reporters in Aberdeen, S.D. "Trinity was where I found Jesus Christ, where we were married, where our children were baptized. We have many friends among the 8,000 congregants."
Obama said he felt he had no choice but to leave the church.
"It's clear that now that I am a candidate for president, every time something is said in the church by anyone associated with Trinity, including guest pastors, the remarks will be imputed to me, even if they totally conflict with my long-held views, statements and principles," he said.
In a statement released this evening, the church said: "Trinity United Church of Christ was informed today that Senator Barack Obama and his family will no longer be members of our church. Though we are saddened by the news, we understand that it is a personal decision. We will continue to lift them in prayer and wish them the best as former members of our Trinity community."
The latest controversy involving the South Side church erupted this past week when an Internet video emerged from an appearance there last weekend by the Rev. Michael Pfleger.
Pfleger, who has had numerous run-ins with Chicago's Roman Catholic archdiocese for his political activism, mocked Sen. Hillary Clinton from the pulpit during a guest appearance at the church. The priest also suggested the former first lady is a white elitist who felt entitled to the Democratic nomination.
Obama has not attended the church since it first entered the national spotlight in mid-March, following the appearance of Internet videos featuring Obama's longtime pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr.
Dwight Hopkins, a theology professor at the University of Chicago Divinity School, who joined Trinity 12 years ago, expressed shock and regret about the senator's decision.
"I thought he would stay because of the good works of the church," Hopkins said, noting Obama's frequent affirmations about the Trinity community. "He had a baptism and marriage connection. I guess the Pfleger thing took it over the top. Maybe Sen. Obama thought the church should not have provided that platform."
Hopkins predicted the congregation would initially react to the news with confusion and anger. But he pointed out that Oprah Winfrey's departure did not have lasting impact on members and predicted that Obama's resignation would not either.
"They didn't come there because of Obama," Hopkins said. "They came there because of the House that Wright that built. And it's still standing."
Wright officially retires Sunday.
After initially responding with a speech on race, Obama in late April was forced to denounce remarks made by Wright after his longtime pastor made a fiery appearance at the National Press Club, where he reaffirmed his view that the U.S. government may have initiated the AIDS epidemic to wipe out minorities, and praised Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.
In his only public appearance of the day Friday, Obama made no mention of Pfleger during a speech in Great Falls, Mont. As the story broke Thursday, his campaign issued a statement expressing disappointment in the priest's "divisive, backward-looking rhetoric."
The Illinois Democrat's roots at Trinity had helped transform him from a transplant into a member of the community, politically and personally.
Obama has carried that credential with him as he made his way up the political ranks. He would sometimes greet black churches by bringing greetings from his pastor, calling him by name.
But the relationship with Wright began to fall apart more than a year ago, as Obama was preparing to launch his White House campaign. Wright had been asked to give a public invocation, but then Obama asked him simply to pray with him privately beforehand.
It wasn't until news stations began to air snippets of some of his most controversial sermons in March that the relationship truly began to unravel. In one, Wright said the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks were the "chickens coming home to roost" on the U.S. for its foreign policy.
In another, he uttered the now-infamous words "God damn America." Obama publicly disagreed with the sentiments in a carefully crafted speech about race, in which he said he could no more disown Wright than one could disown a family member.

What message is he trying to send??Obama can leave the church but his ideals and teachings and raving sermons stay in his head and heart....Sorry. Not impressed...20 years too late....He will never be President....Wright will be his legacy.....People will always think he is a muslim no matter what chuch he goes to...

Interesting. He probably should have done that after the second appearance of the Wright issue. I wonder where he'll go to next? Another UCC, or a different sect altogether?

Obama's decision is based on political miscalculation.
Those who are against the church are going to say it's too little, too late.
Those who have actually read the transcripts of Rev. Wright's remarks are going to say Obama is playing politics as usual.
The latest dust-up is inconsequential as it was a white Catholic priest who was at the podium.
If Obama loses the nomination, it will be because he took his name off the MI ballot.
If he loses the general election, it will be because the country isn't ready to elect a black man, not because of what a reverend (Wright, Hagee, Robertson, etc.) said.

OMG. I am a member of TUCC and I am angry at Rev. Wright and Father Pfleger, and feel heartbroken that Obama is leaving our church.
But, Obama has to do what he has to do.

Obama should never have joined that church since he really is not a Christian. Most Christians have faced the question, "If you were on trial for being a Christian, what evidence would your accusors have to use against you?" In Obama's case there never was a scintilla of evidence to support the charge that he is a real Christian. His membership in his church was simply a smoke-screen to fool the American public. The jig is now up. America must now face the question of whether it is ready to elect the first non-Christian to the Presidency of the United States. The answer to that question will be a resounding, landslide NOOOO!!

Now we know Obama is capable of "closing the barn door after the horses have gotten out." What other qualifications can he offer to justify our electing him to the highest office in the land?

Are kidding me??? This is the great uniter, the candidate of change, the prince of hope??
Barack Obama is leaving his spiritual home after 20 years. Is this really the man who is going to sit with people - who really hate us (Iran, Cuba, Venezuela) and broker the peace? He is effectively showing his first exit stratedgy after the line..."if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen". Why/how could he not even get his friends/church family to respect him and act in accord?
Truely sad.

Yeah, he's "leaving" the church... I'm sure his presidential bid has nooootttthhhhiiiinnnngggg to do with it. Right. LOL.
Posted by: Darryn | May 31, 2008 6:39 PM
Yea, but a) the church is still there, b) he's had 20+ years of listening to those anti-Americans and racists, and c) the only reason he is leaving is because one of his advisor's told him to.
Obama should have left that place years and years ago and his leaving now just highlights his inability to judge what is right and wrong. In this case, that Church's anti-Americanism and racism (while it is protected speech) is terrible.
All this does is further cement the fact that he is not right and is unqualified to being President. His 20 year brand of change is not the change that many people want.

Obama is the biggest fraud ever. I'm sorry for all the people he used at Trinity Church. He likes to throw people under the bus and he just threw 8,000 of them under there in one shot!

What a crazy election year. This guy has to feel the need to leave his own church, because a bunch of right-wing smear-mongers made a big deal out of Rev Wrights out of context remarks. I guess nothing is sacred when it comes to Obama. I for example, have found Rev Wright to be for the most part enlightening and uplifting. What a shame that a couple of sentences can tear down a legacy of helping the community. This church has been maligned to no end. A sad state of affairs in a country that prides itself on freedom of religion!!!

To the Obama fans, do you really think the pastor of the Trinity United Church of Christ just became racist since Obama decided to run for president??? Obama has been a member of this church for twenty years. A church is nothing but bricks and mortar, it is the membership that makes up the church, and it didn't become racist in the past 6 months. Is this REALLY the kind of person you want in the White House?
And, after the horror of 9/11 do you really want a president named Barack HUSSEIN Obama in the White House?
I am a democrat who will proudly be voting for McCain in November.
Do you think Obama will re-join his racist church membership when he loses the election?
Wake up America, the kind of change Obama wants will be a disaster for all!

he is only leaving as a political posturing move.
He told the Canadians his stance against NAFTA was also "just political posturing".
He just does what he can to get the job. How can he be a racist and attend a racist church for 20+ years and just now decide it isn't a good thing.
C'mon now people.. please wake up.

I think its sad that this has come to pass, I don't understand why Obama must respond to Pfleger--he was only a guest clergy. I do believe that Pfleger made those comments, knowing that he(Pfleger) would receive national attention.
On the church issue, is it any different than any other mega-churches? Religion is one of the most intolerant areas of our life. Its time we leave it where it should be: on Sundays or weekends. I choose to follow my conscience--its led my very well this long.

In 20 years, Obama never heard anything, anything at all, that offended him at Trinity.
Now suddenly, Obama's shocked, shocked I tell you, to learn that their is racism at Trinity.

All three remaining candidates are moral people, raised in our culture. That's good enough for me. The less religion has influence in the campaign, the better I like it.
We have a lot of work to do to recover the country from the last 7 1/2 years and religion won't fix any of it.

a person holding such deep seated hate for the white race.
He does not deserve to be president of the United states.
He did not protect the Honor all the while the his church was damning the US. He only distanced himself from the Rev after the rev called him out for who he was- a politican doing what politicans do.

Why didn't Obama have the sense to do this long ago? It's hard enough for a black candidate to get enough white votes - and the GOP is now putting together its attack ads with ranting Rev. Wright, Pleger, etc. Will this move work, or will Obama lose a race to McCain that any other Democrat would win easily? Stay tuned.
Posted by: KGoldberg | May 31, 2008 7:18 PM
I don't get it. What is the point now? He has been there 20 years. All of the Obama zombies continually defended this fiasco. Now what are they gonna say. They are at a lost for words. All this is going to accomplish is for the black liberationist to question Obama's loyalty.
Well a quote from the Karate Kid 3 I remember fits this well.
"Desperate situations call for desperate measures". Guess Obama is realzing how destructive being a member of a radical supremist group is. At least he is cutting ties when the stakes are raised for his presidential bid.
The only good coming out of this is that Trinity has been exposed for their false political gospel.

It's a shame it had to come to this. But I suppose it would serve no purpose to continue to give the Republicans and hatemongers the opportunity to sit there in Trinity every week with cam in hand filming every sermon or speaker that was off-color, backward-leaning, or playing the part of the black victim. All things that are the exact opposite of what Obama and his campaign are about. Despite what Geraldine, Bill and Hillary and many who are disgusted by Rev. Wright or Fr. Pfleger might say or think, Obama is not a token minority. He's the best, smartest candidate in the race who happens to be half-black.

I am upset about Obama's choice to withdraw from the Church. The comments made were borderline but they were made in the contex to incite thought. I agree that Hillary feels entitled to the presidency and that she has been acting that way from the beginning. Who cares what was said - it was said in a mocking manner. Everyone who heard it knows that, and by Barak distancing himself from an organization that has shown him support from the beginning shows a weak character. Now I don't even know if I am going to vote. I think Hillary /McCain are both supporters of the Bush agenda, and Barak does not show the leadership or the balls to stand up for what he believes in. People are upset with what the pastors said because it was the truths that people have been spending so much time trying to deny.. Barak needs to show some loyalty to something before he can regain my vote.

Was he one of the many folks who join a prestegious congregation, then show up on Christmas, Easter, and the occasional wedding?
It doesn't sound Presidential to watch the Bears or sleep in on Sunday, so he wouldn't want to admit it. But that's what most Americans do.
I can't believe he'd sit through 20 years of Wright and Pfleger. They'd be amusing to hear at first, but I'd be bored with their acts in a couple months.

Any Democrat who says they would vote for John McCain over Barack Obama never supported Obama in the first place. Idealogically speaking, there was little difference between Clinton/Obama, but Obama and McCain are worlds apart! What gets me is that many "po" white folks are talking about voting for McCain over Obama. That is truly amazing. You probably can barely afford health insurance, if you have any, and all McCain can offer you is "tax breaks" on health care. Yeah, that'll work if you're poor or middle class. You're a pro-choice woman who is willing to elect a man who clearly stated that he will appoint justices to the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. You've probably got a son, daughter, husband, wife, or other relative in Iraq, yet you're willing to elect a man who originally said that America's presence in Iraq could conceivably be 100 years, but then recently changed it to 2012!
At least Obama was truly affiliated with a church who did good work in the community. McCain recently rejected John "the catholic church is a whore; Hurricane Katrina came because of a gay pride parade" Hagee and Rod "America was created to destroy Islam" Parsley . However, any intelligent person who was even remotely familiar with these two pastors knew the way they thought. Mccain obviously sought their endorsements SOLELY for political reasons. But noone seems to have a problem with that. Double standards!
Many of you are making the assumption that Obama left Trinity for his own political purposes. But have you ever stopped to think that he also left to protect the church as well? Trinity should not have to scrutinize every single word that is said in the pulpit in order to prevent affecting the presidential election. That church has been around for years, before Obama ever came along.
Some of the same folks who are calling Trinity "racist" apparently are not familiar with all the good work that they do in the community. Most of you complaining about Trinity probably don't do a damn thing in your own community to better it. You're concerned about getting a 3-2 and a particular type car and keeping up with the Joneses. Maybe you give turkeys to folks at Thanksgiving. Perhaps you even attend church services every Sunday and think that will get you into heaven. Maybe you attend church on major holidays only and somehow think that will get you in the Pearly Gates. But the "church" is not a building, it's about community. What are you doing after the benediction? Most of you leave church and profess to be Christians, but treat your fellowman/woman like dirt throughout the week - you're probably a boss/employer who treats your employees like gum on the bottom of your shoe, a husband/wife who disrespects their spouse either verbally or physically on a daily basis, a parent who is so busy trying to attain the American dream that you forget to spend time with your kids, etc.
Please, I have had it with all the hypocrisy of you people!! It is truly sad. This is why this country is in the state it is in. People sat back while Bush was "selected" in 2000 and didn't do a damn thing and then had the nerve to "reelect" him in 2004.
Such short memories. I always taught to remember your history, because if you don't, you're doomed to repeat it!
You all go ahead and vote for McCain based on your bogus reasons for voting against Obama - your blatant racism, your incorrect beliefs that he is a Muslim. Go ahead and do that. You think things are bad now. You ain't seen nothing! Yt if you vote against the best interests of the country and vote for John "McSame" McCain, we will all pay dearly!

If you think Trinity is a racist church, you have no clue what you are talking about. Rev. Wright made some poor comments, but if you read entire sermons, you will see a Gospel message that is meant for all people. The most recent controversy is from a WHITE Catholic priest who was a guest speaker. If they were racists, why would they allow a white man at the pulpit?!?! Obama left the church because it would continue to be an election issue when there are so many other issues that need to be addressed. He does not want us distracted from the real problems we need to solve. And if you still believe Obama is a Muslim, then you sir/mam are racists. When was the last time a white person who was not raised in a Christian church but who converted as an adult was accused of not being a real Christian. The last time I checked, the whole purpose of the church was to encourage conversions not to label people as not "true Christians."

The theology professor Hopkins said of the members of TUCC, "They didn't come there because of Obama. They came there because of the House that Wright that built. And it's still standing."—————And that is the core of the problem with Wright, Moss, the professor, the Obamas and the remaining congregants at TUCC: They should've come and stayed because it was the house that God built. —————Clearly, these people can't differentiate between Wright and God. —————Can they even spell “Jesus Christ”? —————Certainly, they should know how to spell “blinded” and “cult.” —————And, no, as one respondent has said, if Barack Obama isn't elected, it won't be because of the color of his skin. —————It'll be because he's a huckster, an arrogant narcisstic man without any moral compass, a leftist who disdains the common man and woman in America, someone who believes he's beyond reproach and entitled, someone who hides behind the color of his skin when his emptiness and gaffes and leftist/ultra-liberal politics and sleazy associations get challenged.—————He also won't be elected because he lacks the knowledge of history, economics, international relations and people as well as the testicularity to provide comfort to Americans that he's won't surrender their liberty or pocketbooks to the rest of the world. —————He also won't be elected because of his blame-America-first, anti-American attitude that manifests itself in saying he would visit with an enemy of the U.S. rather than speak with a general who might actually update Obama's dated ignorance about what's going on in Iraq.——————And he won't be elected because he's already demonstrated that he's unfit and unqualified. And no amount of playing the race card by his minions, including those in Congress and the mainstream media, will change that. But it will create more of the racially divisive excrement that Obama claimed once he wanted to go beyond. ————But regardless of whether he gets nominated or not and, then, should he get nominated, whether he's elected or defeated in November, he is already a racially divisive pol who, along with the Democrat Party's leaders who swoon over him and the MSM which excuses him, has set back racial relations in our country for decades. ————That is truly regrettable. And it’s truly regrettable that when such a historic moment presented itself, he turned out to be such an empty suit and charlatan. People of all colors would’ve voted for him had he been the fiction that his words once said he was.

This was a necessary and reasonable thing to do--it shows good judgment. Circumstances change, and when they do, we must adjust and adapt. That's what Obama did, and that's what a good President would do. If only Bush had changed his mind once he found out that there really were no weapons of mass destruction. We wouldn't have lost thousands of soldiers' lives.

Well, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your viewpoint, I am one of the awful entitled white Catholics that Fr. Phleger denounces. I am also one of those awful white Americans that Rev. Wright denounces. And as long as it appeared that Obama denounced my God by his association with these two very strange men, I refused to listen Barack Obama. Now, while remaining a firm McCain supporter, I find that I avail myself of the “audacity of hope” that every true Christian must ultimately embrace. Now, whatever his reasons whether they be political expediency or truly heartfelt confusion which every true Christian also experiences from time to time, I will listen to Obama and hear what he has to say. I will not guarantee that my family and I will vote for the man. But if he chooses to take his family and wander as a homeless family in the desert in the manner of St. Joseph and the Holy Mother, as every TRUE Christian ultimately must do as well, I can hardly condemn that, I can only praise that, and my thoughts and prayers MUST go with him.
Welcome home, Barack.

Reading the comments on this article makes me very sad. Clearly the cable news shoutfest culture we live in has trickled down to the general public in a very unhelpful way. People seem to find it very easy to make judgment calls on a situation that they have no firsthand knowledge of. Accusing someone of not "really" being a Christian, of throwing people under the bus, of being a Muslim (which is plainly insinuated as being something that is unacceptable) ... it is all foolishness. The United States is facing perhaps the greatest problems it has ever faced, both domestically and internationally. I find it extremely disheartening that Americans are so easily sidetracked from issues of substance into taking reactionary stands of "I'm going to vote for the other party." This is not the time and place for such antics, and my heart is heavy that so many of my fellow citizens feel it is appropriate or justifiable.

Why must we continue to crucify a black man for making a decision that is right for his life and say nothing when a white person makes the same decision? Why harp on what kind of character that senator Obama's pastor has because of statements that he made that are no different than what a white pastor makes. The loudest screamers of crucify Obama should visit any white church on any given Sunday and they will hear the message of separatism discuised as christian duty. There is no law that says a person has to stay in one church all their life. God gave us all free will and intelect so we could make accountable and responsible decisions for our lives. Did you ever think that the baby grew up and now needs a different type of food to sustain himself?

His "religious" home? No way. This was a political base from day one and this "resignation" is just another cover for the truth. Wright + TUCC +Pflegler + St. Sabina + Axelrod + Obama = Dailey. Richard Dailey. And the money keeps flowing. From your pockets to theirs. Amen.

Never have I seen so much interest in the church until now. Obama did the right thing. It allows Trinity to continue their worship services without clandestine spies trying to make recordings under the pew. What is also amazing is the print and electronic media outlets have refused to hold other pastors to the same interrogative standards. Pundits have predicted that all the religious up roar would topple his campaign. The only thing that happened was that he got more delegates and super delegates. The majority of reasonable Americans are not obsessed with pastors and thier churches. Many of the posters on this board never would have voted for Obama anyway, so I surmise that they are not reflective of Americans who TRULY want change. Obama, continue to make decisions without undue influence for everyone who has an opinion. Remember, they accused you of being subject to future influence by Wright and Pfleger, Now where do they turn for criticism?

There is an old say: "You can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy"!!!! Leaving the church is not going to change Obama, Jesus Christ is the one and you have to want to change!!!

Folks, you don't need to wonder national polls favor Hillary in general election against McCain over Obama. Polls have been
this way for months. Those democrats that voted for Obama have no right to complain when it comes at a risk of losing the
white house. electoral map is showning Hillary would win by A LANDSLIDE against McCain while Obama-toast could not even get
the majority (270) needed to win.

***** Guilty by association?! *****
***********************************
You hear that a lot these days and you have to wonder about it. Rev. Wright has 20 years of association and earned an
honorary position on Obama's campaign as spiritual advisor. Is it just that or is it deeper than that? Certainly, there is no
doubt that Obama has repeated associations with Anti-American groups: Bill Ayers, Farrakhan, Hamas, Rev Wright, Tony Rezko,
appeasement-loving groups like Iran, and now Pfleger. Who is next? He flocks to them - uhh, I meant - They flock to him in
masses, endorse him, and even appeal for presidential-level security on Obama's life.
I could not possibly imagine, say if I have a child involving in a group that I don't like a gang, that the child would not
learn bad/criminal habits.
Obama sits in that church for 20 years, and if he misses a surmon, Rev Wright make sure there are ways for makeup session
such as purchasing a CD. If Obama claim ignorance to it then he is not fit to govern any state because he is clueless of a
church of only a few thousands people. How will he handle a country of many millions? you really have 2 choices to pick,
whether guilty by association or not:
1) Obama truely knows nothing of the controversial teaching. This option tells me he lacks good judgement in people and is
out of touch. What kinds of people would he select to the cabinet? More Anti-Americans?
2) He knows and lie. What a two-face!
3) Both 1 and 2.
Take your pick.

Vote Smart! Vote Hillary!
I am long time democrat would not vote for Obama in the general election - period!
His speeches of promises lacking substance and details. One has to question his sincerity. In additions to being the least
qualified candidate in the history of America, he top it off with his REPEATED association with ANTI-AMERICAN groups. He lost
my vote on his own merits.
AMERICA FUTURE IS PRECIOUS. THE BOTTOM LINE is what we need to do what is best for America, not because we need to obey some
party leader who could not even fix the BROKEN primary election process. Vote smart! Vote Hillary! Vote McCain!
Great thinkers are those who could think beyond party lines. If all the republican support Bush just because he is a
republican, then we will all be doomed. Same with democrats. Our loyalty is with America, not some party leaders.
God Bless America. Please don't let any one damn it.

When asked if he thinks Bill Clinton was America's first black president Obama answered he would have to see him dance before he could say whether Bill Clinton was "a real brother or not". Obama seems to agree with the Rev Wright's racist right brain left brain nonesense ... that blacks got rythm and are more creative because they use their right brain and that whites are more logical because they use the left half of the brain.
Why is Obama now disowning he community that he said he could never disown, little as he could disown his grandmother`? Makes you wonder!

I don't understand why the man who presents himself as qualified to be president of the United States because of his superior ability to *bring us together* is going to resign from his church. Why can't he get them to change their views?
Why is it necessary to cave into the revulsion Americans feel at black racism? Why not stand on principle and show backbone.
What has changed about this church that forces his resignation? Its the same as it always has been. Who is Sen. Obama?? Is here merely what his spiritual advisor says: *a politician*?

@ Bud McFarlin,
Obama won't be elected because the country isn't ready to elect a black man that likely harbors extremely racist idealogy like Black Liberation Theology promotes. Add to this his extreme elite liberal political views and he is all but toast this November. He does have the liberal media pulling hard for him though so that is worth a few votes. Did anyone else notice that only Fox News broadcast Obama's news conference about leaving the church? Talk about glaringly liberal bias from our supposedly unbiased media! Obama said he left the church because they are being hammered by the media. Not because he disagrees with the theology promoted by that church. Talk about a guy that will sell his grandmother's soul to get votes! Wait, he DID sell his Grandmother's soul in his Philadelphia speech.

I know that everybody beleives Obama when he claims his first name Barack has a relation to the Hebrew word Barukh, the reality is Barack is the flying creature that Mohammed took an overnight ride on from Mecca to Jerusalem and ascended to all levels of heaven and met Adam, Moses, Jesus, and few other profits and was declared to be God's favorite among profits.

Is anyone else reminded of the movie Network in the 1970's when it comes to the Obama's church debacle. I saw the clip again and I think it is relevant today as we face high gas prices, a downturn in the economy, and foreign policy problems in the Middle East. (looking at you Fox News, you're the worst of all).
How relevant is all of this really?

Obama quits Trinity....WHY? after all, he said "I Don't Think My Church Is Actually Particularly Controversial,".......
""I Can No More Disown Him Than I Can My White Grandmother"........
Wright suggested that Obama was insincere in distancing himself from his pastor. ""He had to distance himself, because he's a POLITICIAN"" We know that if Senator Obama did not say what he said, HE WOULD NEVER GET ELECTED. "Politicans Say What They Say and Do What They Do Based On Electability, Based On Sound Bites,Based On Polls"
................
Obama said "I'm not denouncing the Church "I do think that there is certainly a tradition in the African American church to speak out against injustice"........
So, he is not denoucing TUCC and
Black Liberation Theology therefore, I can only conclude that the resignation is based on Political Expediency........

The remarks that were made did not reflect racism, but reflect realism. There ARE white people who think like that, though I don't think Hillary is one of them. Hillary just felt like she was entitled to the White House.

You can always tell if Obama has done something that the Extremist Right Wingnuts fear will help him by the comments made here.
Add up all references to Obama being: muslim, communist, racist, sleazy politician, etc. The bigger the number, the more likely he's hit a nerve. Squirm while you still can, Rethuglicans. Your days are numbered.

I have lived on the West Coast for 33 years, but was raised in Hyde Park where Sen. Obama has lived his adult life and forged his career.
I can't help but think that he doesn't want anyone to know about his life and career in Hyde Park. It seems like he would rather have had people think he was a muslim and, later, think that he belonged to a radical, racist church than know where he lived and who helped him develop his career.
In my mind, his membership in Trinity UCC looked like alternative to the belonging to a middle class, liberal protestant church in Hyde Park. If he had conceded as much in the beginning, and the idea is understandable to me, I think he could have avoided a lot of trouble. The religion issue still could sink his campaign, and that ultraliberal bastion, Hyde Park, is what lies behind it all.
Now he also has to deal with perceived hypocrisy of quitting Trinity UCC only when the appearance there of a renegade Catholic priest threatened his efforts reach out the blue collar white voter in the Midwest and Northeast.
I don't think Barack has quite won this thing just yet. What he is doing right now is "assuming the sale". Depending on what happens in the next few weeks, he might or might not get it.
Posted by: Mike Field | May 31, 2008 10:08 PM
Is it at all possible that he is not trying to send a message at all? Is it possible that he doesn't really care how his decision will be received?
We are cynical indeed to assume that spiritual decisions are secondary to political ones. Anyone who has ever felt a connection to God should be ashamed for implying it.
Posted by: j f n | May 31, 2008 10:09 PM
I see nothing shameful in Obama's decision. He said that he was leaving the church because the statements of even guest pastors will be imputed to him.
If Wright is retiring, then I imagine there will be several guest pastors in the future of the church?
To me, Obama's asserted reason for the decision is honest and in accord with the facts we have in this story. He hasn't tried to hide the political rationale, so it makes little sense to fault him for it. As president, he will have to make lots of "political" decisions -- the Obama difference is that he does it with integrity.

I look forward to supporting Mr. Obama's candidacy in the fall. I could not care less about which church he ends up in. The candidates' picks of church don't interest me in the least.
This is the United States of America, not some country with a state religion. He could belong to the Church of Cellphones for all I care. I can look out for my own religious interests and don't require my President to share them.
I want a President who will help heal the poisonous atmosphere of our so-far-from-bipartisan politics in Washington DC, and I think Obama can do exactly that. (Unless of course the media decide to rip it down just because they didn't end up with an easier target to toy with. )
