The Swamp

by Mark Silva

The paired image of President George W. Bush and Sen. John McCain of Arizona glides across the screen of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama's new presidential campaign TV ad, warning: "After one president in the pocket of Big Oil, we can't afford another.''

On a day in which Obama will be talking about energy independence in Lansing, Mich., the Democratic candidate for president has launched a frontal attack on his Republican rival for accepting campaign contributions from the oil companies at a time of record oil industry profits and painful gas pump prices. McCain's collections from the oil industry soared after he announced his support for off-shore oil-drilling, independent research groups have pointed out. The Obama ad totals it up: $2 million for McCain from the oil industry.

"Every time you fill your tank, the oil companies fill their pockets,'' says the narrator of Obama's new ad, the screen noting $143 billion in profits for the industry. "Now big oil is filling Jjhn McCcain's campaign with $2 million in contributions.'' The ad touts Obama's support for a "windfall profits tax'' on the industry, promising to turn that money into $1,000 "rebates'' for each family. Obama: "A president who will stand up for you.''

For its part, the Republican National Committee is "celebrating'' Obama's 47th birthday today with the delivery of "gifts'' to American newsrooms - a tire gauge, symbolic of Obama's suggestion that motorists should inflate their tires more to ensure greater fuel economy.

The McCain campaign, calling off-shore oil-drilling part of a solution to long-term energy needs that should help alleviate the price of gas in the short run, slams Obama for opposing it - though Obama, over the weekend, suggested that he could support some form of drilling as part of the negotiations for a broader piece of energy legislation that lessens the country's dependence on oil. McCain, like Obama, proposes the development of alternative sources of energy as well, with McCain supporting construction of more nuclear power plants.

Obama conveniently forgets HE took money from big oil, too -- it's IN his pocket!

The problem I have with people like Beth, is that they have resolved to thinking through republicans and not themselves. Of course the republican party will stand to make any voter in america dumb, because they cant play on peoples intelligence, they play on stupidity and it works. McCain wont make it! simple! Does that mean, he knew he would make more money by supporting off shore drilling... seems to have worked!

Obama is talking about tapping the Strategic Oil Reserve on the same day that Iran talks about closing the Straight of Hormuz, where much of the world's oil ships through. Obama obviously doesn't understand the purpose of the Strategic Oil Reserve! The only thing consistent about Obama is his poor judgement and decision-making.

You got a citation for that claim, Bethorino?
I thought as much.
Am so glad Obama's attacking with FACTS as opposed to PRE-EMPTIVE WHINING like McSame.
Remember---negative campaigning works or it they wouldn't try it.
So does stealing elections. We've got to watch them with video cameras and lawyers at the ready.

Worse yet-Obama is in Chicago Politicians Pockets, plus a few other unmentionables-

Wrong, Beth. Obama's "contributions" have been small incraments from some "employees". Not executives like McCain's. If a guy who works behind the counter at a Shell station contirbuted $5 to Obama's campaign, that is NOT taking money from big oil. No matter how much you try to spin it that way.

McCain receives 3-times more form the oil industry than Obama. And 12 - times more from PACS.

McCain is in the pocket of the biggest oil of all- The Saudis.

Tom Loeffler , his former national campaign co-chair, was paid over one million dollars to lkobby for the Saudis while he was working full time for the McCain campaign. During that same period of time he registered no work on the Saudis behalf.

The Saudis are underwritting the McCain Campaign. They got something for their million dollars, access and influence to McCain at the highest levels.

Here's info from a CNN interview -- and yes, it does include the execs and employees giving to McCain (who, by the way, I do not support).

CNN’s Kiran Chetry: “Just to clarify. According to The Washington Post, oil and gas industry executives and employees donated $1.1 million to John McCain’s campaign last month. So, I think that is what he’s referring to in that ad.”

Gov. Romney: “But what you don’t point out is the employees and executives of the oil companies also gave money to Barack Obama and to suggest that they only gave to John McCain is dishonest. There’s no indication that that’s the case. In fact, individuals can give to candidates of both parties and they regularly do.”

"Every time you fill your tank, the oil companies fill their pockets,'' says the narrator of Obama's new ad, the screen noting $143 billion in profits for the industry.

What he neglects to mention, is that everytime you fill your tanks, the government also fills their pockets, about three times as much as the evil oil companies do.

McCain has accepted over $1 million from the oil and gas industry. Many of McCain's top advisers have lobbied for big oil, which is why he now acts in their best interests, opposing environmental legislation and alternative energy plans.

McCain is desperate to distance himself from Bush. But according to the Center for American Progress Action Fund, McCain has received millions in donations from the same oil, coal, nuclear, chemical, utility, and auto companies that helped the Bush administration create its energy plana plan that has raised gasoline to $4 a gallon.

When George Bush took office the price of gas was $1.46/gal.

Today, Americans are getting screwed at the pump while oil companies reap the highest profits for any industry in the history of this nation.

And today, lobbyists for big oil and other companies are running John McCain's campaign including Randy Scheunemann, McCain's top foreign policy advisor who also worked for Stephen Payne. The same Stephen Payne who can be seen here screwing the US with a "foreign leader":

VOTE HOPE! VOTE CHANGE! OBAMA '08!

I am greatly amused with all of the misinformation the Republicans are trying pawn off as facts. There they go again, trying tired. old, " fear and smear " campaign !! When will they realize that the precarious situation the Republicans have put America into, both, here at home, and internationally, with all their lies and distortions, will not put their " Humpty-Dumbty " back together, again. They had their chance for the last 8 years and it has been 8 years of incompetence and criminal negligence. There will be a few of them going to jail for their " high crimes and misdemeanors "!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Isn't it amazing that people like Beth are being fooled yet again by Karl Rove.

For just the Federal Income Taxes alone, the Federal Government's cut of the 143 Billion would be 50 Billion. For a business partner with next to nothing at risk, that would seem to be a nice piece of the action in itself.

They absolutely have to. Even a cockroach will generally have a desire to remain functionally viable.

So, we have to bring back the Failure Based Economic Policies of the Ignominious Jimmy Carter. What this effectively is, is a Tax on Risk Investment, Productivity, and Efficiency. Very well suited for producing Less Energy. Economics, democrat style.

The $1,000 rebates will no doubt be "targetted" rebates. They always are, in a democrats' Scheme of Taxation. A bit fantastical to imagine that a democrat is going to cut Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, or Mark Cuban a check, for any reason. I have been easily confused for one of them any number of times.

Poor, Poor Babies. Not getting $1000! How will they survive? Will they have to take one less trip on their private jets? The ultra wealthy really do suffer so. I have so much sympathy for them. Their plight really pulls my heartstrings. Is there a charity I can contribute to to make sure that they don't have to suffer so much?

Barack has a simple solution, let's tax the "windfall" profits his campaign is producing (even $2 million of the $52 million he took in last month would help) to give everyone a handout, er, rebate. After all, government confiscation of private money is only fair, right?

Liz,

You may have slightly missed the point here. I am not at all worried about them, as neither of you. The rich are to be hated in America. It's a long standing tradition, long before any of these socialists arrived on the scene.

I don't think though, that Django's rung on the Economic Ladder, as nice as it may be, and nice it is, is the same as Their rung. Maybe it has never happened to you, but democrats consistently lump Me in with Them.

I personally make modest donations to the Disabled American Veterans, when I can. Maybe you will consider that if you are in need of a charity.

I don't think anyone in my little elite list needs to receive a donation, including me. What Obama is proposing, is a new Old Tax, and like all taxes, the consumer pays. I am not suckered in by his "rebate" sound bites. That's all.

Bush Texan,
Obama didn't say all drilling would be fine. He is NOT advocating what the rightwing nuts are advocating, he mentioned it as part of an overall energy plan. AND he mentioned them drilling on the 68 million acres they already have under contract, not giving big oil companies new leases and new contracts like the Wingnuts want to do so they can continue to sell us out to big corporations and big oil companies.
Get your rightwing lunitic fringe talking points straight.
Oh, that's right, you nuts don't deal in fact, only innuendo. You voted for Bush twice, I think that pretty much sums up your "knowledge" of the issues in a nut shell.

Then maybe you'll be interested in McCain's "gas tax holiday" scam, Bush voter Scotty.

It would cause us to lose over 250,000 road and bridge construction jobs and the employees who do the work would get layed off....all for a grand total of about $1.35 total gas savings for an individual consumer during the summer months.

At least Obama is giving examples of things you can do yourself to help conserve gas -- get regular tune-ups, make sure your tires are properly inflated. Unlike our current Prez -- people are smart; they'll figure it out. The marketplace works. Whatever that means.

And I love how people still bash President Carter -- but you know what? If Reagan hadn't eliminated the programs Carter put in place and worked towards finding alternative fuels we'd be in a much, much better place. The same with Bush II -- he had opportunity after opportunity to raise the fuel standards on vehicles but didn't. Why? Because it would be a financial hardship on the car manufacturers. That worked pretty well for them, didn't it?

Milw-Res,

Do you really have to have a president to tell you to tune up your car and inflate your tires. Not intending to be critical here, but I would be willing to bet ANYONE that someone like Obama could not even FINE the rearward plugs on my Sebring. I just don't need mechanical advice from a politician.

The only real purpose of an "Excess Profits Tax" is to bring ruin to that industry or business that is being taxed in a highly dubious non-constitutional way. An "Excess Profits Tax"
- Discourages Risk
- Reduces Productivity
- Lowers Efficiency
- Is Selectively Punitive
- Higher Tax Rate but over time Lower Tax Revenues

Jimmy Carter never got any of this. Unfortunately people seem to think that we need to re-live it all over again.

Yes, I think that Ronald Reagan was a great president. Yes, I wish that he could have done more to encourage alternate fuels.

Yes, I think that George Bush 41 was a good enough president. Yes, I wish that he could have done more to encourage alternate fuels.

If we may be fair, I think that Bill Clinton had an 8 year opportunity also. I wish that he could have done more to encourage alternate fuels. Also to be fair, President Bush 43 has included this on-going problematic issue in more than one State of the Union addresses. I don't google. I was there, watching and listening. The democrats had a look of total disdain.

Maybe Obama has a Time Machine. No one else that I know does. IT IS TIME TO DO SOMETHING MATERIALLY TANGIBLE RIGHT NOW, in this year, 2008. I know oil. Oil is not evil.

If democrats don't really care to develop energy resources, they need to stand tall and just say it. I Damn sure do not need them to tell me how to take care of my car. Have a nice day.

John E.

I'm making the supreme 2nd effort sacrifice to respond to your most thoughtful comments. Hopefully the Swamp Master will pass me through this time.

Bush Texan. I kind of like that. I feel 6 ft tall (-2 inches actually). Django is better though, because it reaffirms the spiritual connection that I have with the Great Django Reinhardt, Gypsy Jazz Guitar Virtuoso of better days past. I guess I would have to say I like that better.

At first it seemed like you had cut back on the name calling, but then you ran me through your grinder. I was so prematurely proud of you. So not right.

John E, here's the thing about the great Obama. I have NO idea as to what he claims that he will do with respect to Energy. You think that I can follow all of this shucking and jivin' ? No way man. Absolutely No Way. I may as well speculate on what the Man In The Moon is doing tonight.

This is an extremely difficult concept for democrats. Hang tough though. You just can't punch a hole anywhere in the Gulf of Mexico, or even Texas, and find oil. Those incredibly large drillijng rigs are leased at a rate of $250,000 PER Day in some situations. You have to be able to find oil or gas or both in COMMERCIALLY PRODUCIBLE VOLUMES and find it with some consistency. Otherwise you lose money and neither me, you maybe, the NY Yankees, or ExxonMobil can go on forever losing money. The exploration zones are LEASED. The oil companies do not destroy them and they do not get to keep them, nor do they want to.

If the democrats are opposed to Hydrocarbon Based Energy, and they clearly are, they just need to STAND TALL and say so. Republicans need to make damn sure that the non-political independent voters in this country understand that there is an unmistakably CLEAR IDEOLOGICAL DIFFERENCE between them and the ' No Energy in 08 ' democrats. You can always walk. It's your choice.

One more thing. I have voted for George W. Bush at least 3 times. No election thievery, but we absolutely had to get rid of the socialist governor that preceeded him. No one could afford the damn property taxes, unless you did own 50% of ExxonMobil.

Have a Nice Night.
