MAD's Obama and McCain, the movies: The Swamp

Chicago Tribune

This is one cover position that a candidate for president might rather pass.

If Barack Obama and John McCain were movies...

That's MAD magazine's jumping-off point for a couple of spoofs on the presidential candidates of the two major political parties.

Mad Obama.jpg

MAD casts Obama, the junior senator from Illinois, in "46 Year Old Virgin.'' Political, in this case.

And MAD casts McCain, the senior senator from Arizona, in "No Country for Old Men.'' This man, in this case.

Equal time in the bashing box?

Unfairness Doctrine upheld?

Not sure about that.

MAD's cover recasts its iconic Alfred E. Neuman in the image (well, sort of) of Obama.

The magazine suggests that it may yet get around to spoofing the independent and Libertarian candidates, Ralph "28 Days" Nader and Bob "Barr-ella'' - though neither one of them is likely to object if they escape this treatment.

With thanks to D.C. Comics for its MAD images.

hilarious.

political candidates are fair game for ribbing + satire (SNL sketches, anyone?) so I don't see why some are upset over these MAD covers. Hilarious.

Everyone knows Obama is a politicial Virgin. Ask any supporter of Obama what he has done for Illinois voters since becoming U,S. Senator from Illinois. There is silence.

Now this is some funny stuff! Grandpa McCain could learn from Mad about funny. His stupid, shallow, just plain embarrassing to America ad's that he tried to pass off as humor - really weren't funny. Mad's entries... funny.

"Running the nation? This guy should even be driving!"... is hilarious! So true... McCrabby would be 73 his first year as president if he were elected.

I'll take the 46 year old political virgin thank you... at least Obama can stay awake during meetings.

Funny.

I remember when the magazine first came out lo these many years ago. people thought I looked like Alfred E. Neuman so for a while my nickname was "Alfie". Halcyon days those.

MadTV on the other hand - I have no idea why they call it that. It has really no connection to the magazine, which is much funnier.

"Stuart" is sometimes funny but he reaches the "enough is enough" point quicker and quicker the more I watch the show, which is rapidly diminishing.

I remember the cover shot of Alfred as Pres. Bush, and so the shot of Alfred as bo is nice to see for the sake of balance.

Quite funny; however, it's very telling that Obama's "movie" is highly accurate, whereas the rib on McCain is blantant agism. I agree with Clarence above 100%. I teach a college class part-time and I asked my 35 students (most young, Obama supporters) last week to name one thing that Obama has done for Illinois. Complete and utter silence-- not even an attempt to fabricate something. More and more, it becomes painfully apparent how naive Obama supporters are. Hopefully the semi-smart ones will come around.

Regarding Obama's supposed lack of accomplishment, read this impressive article (if you're interested), "Judge Him by His Laws". Why he doesn't promote this more actively is another question..? www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/03/AR2008010303303.html

These are so funny! Why are the politicos so upset? Isn't a sense of humor part of being human? I notice that this election the candidates, especially Obama, tend to be a bit thin-skinned. If one cannot handle satire and humor, how can you handle the office?

Reagan was an old man. Clinton wasn't a political virgin. Carter was just a virgin. MAD is great! "Yes, We Can't." Says it all!

Is it true that the last time we had a junior legislator from Illinois run for president, we had a civil war?

The reason Illinois residents can't recall what Obama has done for us is that he hasn't been the subject of a federal investigation. That act alone makes him a standout Illinois politician.

BAD wrote "The reason Illinois residents can't recall what Obama has done for us is that he hasn't been the subject of a federal investigation. That act alone makes him a standout Illinois politician."

He hasn't done anything for the people of Illinois.
There is nothing to investigate.

Obama supporters should understand that Obama won his seat in the state legislature only after he had all of his opponents removed from the ballot. Also, he only won the Illinois Senate race because Jack Ryan dropped out and Alan Keyes replaced him.

Face it, Obama is doing the same thing now by asking to have Michigan and Florida count as full votes. He initially did not want them to count at all, then said they could count as half-votes.

If only Obama supporters knew the truth.

wow. why propogate this crap? I am so tired of the images we get stuffed down our throats and the issues that get burried in the hoopla. Just don't even report this next time. It has no merit in our decisions for our country. why propogate it.

SS, Does it matter how he was elected to his current position? I think what matters is how you feel about his stance on the issues he'll deal with in office. i.e. our country, and our country in a global setting. he's our figure head. I'll take him, if 200,000 euros want to come out and see him, i think that's great for our country.

Obama supporters also need to know that legislation passed while in the Illinois Senate was handed to him by Emil Jones, Senate President. He considers himself Obama's kingmaker and carefully picked what pieces of legislation he would take from other senators and give to Obama. Funny, that Emil Jones' district is benefitting from Obama's earmarks, as are Rev. Wright's and Father Pfleger's programs. The rest of us don't matter - we are not part of the Chicago political machine - the pay-for-play politics taken to the max!

Keep spoutin' those lies, SS (how appropriate). Obama's opponent for the IL legislature didn't follow election rules. It was YOUR party that removed Ryan from the ballot, not Obama. And Obama is calling for all delegates to be included, not for his nomination, but for other matters that concern the party at the convention. And it wasn't his call that they be included or excluded previously.

If only you could DISCERN the truth rather than make up stories based on lies.

Obama is where he is because of luck, ambition, political skill, great oratory skill and his skills and experience as a community organizer. He has been blessed with weaker opponents, but Obama would have beaten Ryan without the divorce becoming public, IL has become a blue state and it is and will be very difficult for any republican to win a statewide race. Where he got lucky was the division of the primary voting blocks allowed him to build a collation to win. The Convention speech sealed the Senate race and began his accent to the White House. One does not run for the Senate or President without massive ambition and political skill and that goes for McCain as well. His experience and skill as a community organizer is seen in his campaign. He is building massive ground operations that should swing the vote around 3% off the polls his way come election Tuesday. No other national Democrat has done this while the GOP has. Right now Obama ground game is LT while McCain's is Benson. This is going to be the main reason Obama wins this November.

What most of the media failed to report is that the vast majority of those "200,000 euros" were there to see two rock concerts. Obama was simply the opening act. (And what an actor he is!)
McCain in '08!

Why is it okay to make fun of McCain for being old, a fact he can not change. And it is not okay to make fun of Obama for being black, or at least half-black.

My point is-- that age is no more an acceptable basis for derision than race.

Bleu, how did you get stuck having to respond to pro-Obama comments tonight? Were all the other campaign volunteers busy on other blogs? I've noticed on all the blogs online that there seem to be McCain operatives poised to respond to every pro-Obama post. You can always tell them because they start hitting talking points and dragging up obscure votes. Or are you calling yourself an "intern" because you're doing it in the summer?

I loved the Virgin one the best. I think Obama gave it all abroad.

OBAMA BACKS ABORTION.

Keith, are you saying there wasn't a concert?

Kwith-there you go with that usual RIGHT WING CONSPIRACY theory, ha.

ANNE-Actually, they are now giving all the credit for the MAKING OF OBAMA to the one he names only as FRANK in his book Dreams.....I guess they did investigation and found him to be Frank Marshall Davis, a radical>

This one really hurt me...........

.......I feel of the couch laughing so hard when I saw this on ABC News this morning!!!

Couldn't the Republican Party make a deal with MAD and run "Yes We Can't" in Times Square?

Both funny, Obama ones funnier. Anyone who can't see the humor here is in waaaaay to deep (although I am still trying to figure out what's up with the zombie figures in the McCain ad...is that a mixed metaphor?) Anyhow thanks again Mad for giving equal-opportunity mockery to the world!

Oh, anyone leaving a "pro-Obama" defense against these sarcastic, facetious jokes are, I dunno, just lighten up, wouldya?

Mad Magazine is good treatment for depression.

Wow, here we go again..

A lot of people sure love repeating right-wing chain emails blindly. First, the reason Obama ran almost unopposed in Illinois is this:

Republicans knew it was a losing battle. Illinois loves Obama - this is a fact - he won upwards of 70% there. When you run against someone who is that popular, and you lose, you will not easily get campaign contributions again. Thus, the only guy they could get, was the carpetbagger loser Alan Keys, who already has a lousy reputation, and thus no political career to lose.

Next, Obama's record from college onward:

*Columbia University graduate of political science/international relations
*Harvard Law School, Juris Doctor Magna Cum Laude Graduate/First black President of Harvard Law Review
*12 years as a scholar of constitutional law/8 years as a lecturer.
*11 years as a law associate/counsel (Sidley & Austin and Hopkins & Sutter)
*3 years as director of Chicago DCP
*2 years at Business International Corporation/New York Public Interest Research
Group
*7 years as an Illinois State Senator
*4 years as a U.S. Senator - so popular, elected with 70% of the vote
*Founding member of the board of directors of Public Allies.
*Acting member of The Senate Foreign Relations Committee
*Chairman of the Senate's subcommittee on European Affairs

*Sat on the board of directors of:
the Woods Fund of Chicago
The Joyce Foundation
Chicago Annenberg Challenge
Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law
The Center for Neighborhood Technology
Lugenia Burns Hope Center

He sure looks like an accomplished enough man to me, and his positions are a heck of a lot better than those of Mr. half-senile-and-out-of-touch McCain - a man who voted 95% in-line with Bush, and 87.8% in-line with Congressional Repubs in the last 8 years (yeah, all THAT worked really well, as our economy and standing in the world lie in ruins).

What a great disappointment!!!! Obama is a big fat disappointment.

So sad this is what we have to live with. I wonder if his bitch of a wife will be proud to be an american when people find out what a scam this whole deal is n people start to wake up n smell the roses.
